Where to Eat, Drink, Shop and Play in Kips Bay

Ask a local, and they’ll say Kips Bay has more to offer than Times Square. In fact, the city’s best food, museums, shopping, happy hours and more are all near Kips Bay Court. Find a few of our favorite places below.

1. MODERN PINBALL

Enjoy dozens of modern and classic pinball machines and arcade games right in Kips Bay at Modern Pinball. This family-friendly arcade will make you feel young again (and maybe a little nostalgic) as you choose from the wide selection which includes Aerosmith and Star Wars pinball, along with Pac-Man and Mortal Combat.

A price of $14.95 gets you an hour, $16.95 two hours and $29.95 for a day pass. Admission gets you free play of any games. (Location: 362 3rd Ave.)

2. DOG & BONE

Grab lunch, brunch or dinner at this neighborhood restaurant and bar that focuses on comfort foods with a British slant.

Inspired by an English Bulldog named Winston, Dog & Bone is a casual spot serving up “bangers and mash,” beer-battered fish’n’chips, artisan sausages and classics like burgers, grilled chicken and buffalo wings.

The spot also has a dog-friendly sidewalk café that stretches along 25th Street that is open during the warmer months. (Location: 162 East 25th St.)

3. HOLOGRAPHIC STUDIOS

Founded in 1979 by Jason Sapan, Holographic Studios is the world’s oldest gallery of holography. During the hour tour, “Dr. Laser” will discuss the history and technology behind the images, teaching in a way that’s entertaining and easy to understand. Visitors get to interact closely with the science and art behind the magic of holography.

After seeing the holograms, you will be escorted down to the underground laser laboratory where you will get to see how holograms are made.

Next time you’re looking for something cool to do with family or friends, avoid the crowded tourist attractions and visit Dr. Laser. (Location: 240 E 26th St.)

4. DOVER STREET MARKET

The Comme des Garcons-owned Dover Street Market is a seven-story multi-brand designer store featuring designs by Gucci, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs and jewelry by Azlee and Maryam Nassir Zadeh. The shop also houses a branch of Paris’s Rose Bakery on its ground floor that is not to be missed. It's a great spot to grab a light lunch or coffee. (Location: 160 Lexington Ave.)

5. STAY GOLD

From the team behind Up & Up, comes Stay Gold. This stylish (yet casual) bar serves over 16 cocktails, along with beer, wine, along with bar fare and burgers.

Adding to its appeal, Stay Gold is comprised of three sections that can fit 150 people: the front room is an antique bar, the back is more lounge-like with banquettes, and then, there’s a back patio with its own bar. (Location: 360 3rd Ave.)

Of course it’s impossible to include everything in a city like New York. Have a favorite neighborhood spot that’s not on this list? We’d love to hear from you: stories@beamliving.com.
