The 5 Best Diners Near Kips Bay

Kips Bay might not exactly be known for its dining scene, eclipsed by nearby culinary meccas like the Village and Union Square. However, it does boast a solid diner scene. Because sometimes you’re not in the mood for, say, traditional Korean barbecue or French fine dining. You want a no-frills cup of joe and a fat stack of flapjacks. We got you. Here are our top five diners near Kips Bay Court.

SARGE'S DELICATESSEN & DINER

548 3rd Ave

It may be a stereotype that cops love diners but, in this case, it’s true. Sarge’s is owned by a retired cop (hence the name) and serves up first-rate, Jewish-leaning comfort food in a pleasantly eclectic, retro space. Think: cheese blintzes, matzo ball soup, and smoked fish platters, alongside French toast, pancakes, and a sizeable omelet selection.

JOE JR. RESTAURANT

167 3rd Ave

Located in nearby Grammercy, Joe’s is a snug little spot recognizable by its vintage storefront signage. Inside, patrons can choose between a handful of booths or snag one of the retro stools at the counter for a truly old-school diner experience. The menu of diner staples is served hot and fast, including a burger dubbed “New York City’s Best Burger” by Eater in 2015. A controversial title in a city rife with excellent burgers, to be sure, but one worth taste-testing for yourself.

MOONSTRUCK DINER

449 3rd Ave

Moonstruck dishes out a large menu of classic diner staples in a not-so-classic diner space. Trading bright lighting and laminate booths for rustic wooden furniture and an upscale, streamlined vibe more reflective of a bistro than a pancakes-and-eggs joint, Moonstruck is a solid spot for those who like a bit of both. They also have a full bar fashioned from, wait for it, a wraparound fish tank (you have to see it for yourself).

ORION DINER & GRILL

395 2nd Ave

Orion serves up quality diner food 24 hours a day, seven days a week. That means that, whatever the hour, you can expect heaping portions of filling foods from an extensive menu of eats that includes more than 50 (!) signature burgers, a wide variety of classic breakfast dishes, an impressive array of deli sandwiches, and a lengthy dessert list spanning decadent ice cream sundaes to sugar free apple pie. Don’t feel like eating in? They offer free delivery!

THE BLUEBELL CAFE

293 3rd Ave

OK, so the Bluebell isn’t truly a diner in the traditional sense, but if you’re looking for slightly upscale takes on traditional diner breakfast plates in a charming space with a rustic, homey aesthetic, this is your spot. Sadly, breakfast isn’t served 24/7 here, but Bluebell Café’s weekend brunch offers generous servings of dishes like the Country Eggs – scrambled eggs with a homemade buttermilk biscuit, sausage gravy, and potatoes.
